Online German Course A1 to C1: How to Choose One That Works
You are comparing online German courses. Some type german course online into the search box, some German language course, and all of them land in the same torment: Wer die Wahl hat, hat die Qual. Who has the choice has the agony. Let me shorten it.
How to choose an online German course
Three checks separate a course that gets you to fluency from one that collects dust:
One path, not a playlist. A real course decides what comes next, because every lesson builds on the last. If you are the one deciding what to study today, that is a library with a login.
Speaking from lesson one, with training wheels. If speaking starts at B1 or costs extra, you will arrive at B1 unable to speak. But the opposite is just as damaging: courses that throw you into free conversation on day one teach you to fail fluently. Guided speaking from the first lesson, free speaking when you have something to stand on. I repair both kinds of damage weekly.
One teacher, one method. Content stitched together from freelancers teaches you five mini-methods that contradict each other. One person should own the whole path and answer for it. And do not worry: you will get used to me. Or I will make you get used to me. Verstanden? 👮♂️
Run every course you consider through those three checks. Including mine.
What is inside my membership
Ten courses, one membership, built and taught by me over 25 years:
- A1 to C1: one structured path from your first word to real fluency
- Exam prep for A1, for Goethe and telc B1, the citizenship level, and for the DSH university exam. A2 to C2 exam prep is in the making for 2027.
- German Grammar Genius: the complete grammar course, taught by Alessio Bona. Yes, someone else teaches on my platform. He earned it. If you do not fall in love with German grammar after this course, you must be French.
- Hack the German Articles: der, die and das stop being a lottery. Can you imagine a life where articles are your friend and not your enemy?
- All relevant tools included for free
Everything is explained in clear English, and you speak from the first lesson, with training wheels where needed. Test all of it free for 7 days, or in some regions with a free first lesson. After that it is a simple monthly membership. Cancel when you want, I do not lock doors. And if my courses ever stop working for you, do not vanish: write me, or bring your questions to my weekly live class every Wednesday.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which online German course is best?
The one you are still using in month three. Structure, guided speaking from day one, one consistent teacher. Trials exist so you can verify all three before paying, so use them, mine included.
Do I get a certificate?
No online course I know of issues the certificate that counts. In Germany that comes from the official Goethe or telc exams, and my exam prep courses get you through exactly those, at a fraction of the price of the official course routes. You take the exam as an external candidate: same certificate, less money, less time. For employers and the Bürgeramt, only those names matter.
What level do I need for German citizenship?
B1, in most cases. The course path takes you there step by step, and the B1 exam prep handles the test itself. If you want the full picture, read my citizenship wizard in the Germany guide.
What if I start at the wrong level?
You will not have to guess: the free 20-minute level check places you first, and the membership includes all levels anyway. Starting wrong costs you a click, not a purchase.
