German for Homeschoolers

This page explains how SmarterGerman can be used as a German course inside a homeschool program. It describes the level structure (A1–C1), typical documentation approaches, and how families commonly represent foreign language study on transcripts. SmarterGerman teaches German; parents decide whether and how to assign credit.

Typical Requirements (For Reference)

In the U.S., foreign language expectations are commonly described in “years” of study. Many high schools list two years for graduation, and some colleges prefer two to four years. These are typical reference expectations, not universal rules.

Requirements vary by state, umbrella school, and college. Some programs expect hour logs; others prefer a materials list and evidence of completed work. Use whatever format your program expects.

CEFR Levels & What Students Learn

SmarterGerman is organized by CEFR levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1). CEFR is an international standard used to describe language ability. Each level represents a defined scope of grammar, vocabulary, and communicative ability. Students can start at A1 or place into a higher level if they already have experience.

LevelPractical Description
A1Basics: core vocabulary, simple sentence patterns, and predictable everyday situations.
A2Everyday communication: routine tasks and short descriptions of people, places, and daily life.
B1Independent use: travel situations, connected speech, and opinions with reasons.
B2Complex input: longer texts and discussions; stronger argumentation; more natural interaction.
C1Advanced use: flexible language for academic and professional contexts; precision, nuance, and longer writing.
Preparation courses exist for external exams (e.g., Goethe-Institut exams, telc, DSH). Exams are administered by independent institutions, not by SmarterGerman. DSH exams are conducted only by German universities. Exam fees are not included. SmarterGerman does not register students, book exam dates, or handle communication with exam providers.

Why German?

German is a standard credit-bearing foreign language on U.S. transcripts and is widely accepted for admissions. It is also practically useful for families interested in Europe, STEM-related study paths, or later study abroad. If the goal is educational (language competence + transcript strength), German fits cleanly into typical documentation formats.

Transcript Fit

German is commonly accepted as a standard high-school foreign language on transcripts.

English Connection

German and English share roots; many words and some patterns become familiar quickly.

Academic Use

German can matter for certain university paths and collaboration with German institutions.

Real-World Access

German opens access to media and everyday communication when traveling or living in German-speaking areas.

Long-Term Skill

Consistent language study builds attention, memory routines, and deliberate practice habits.

European Pathways

For families considering Europe later, German is one of the broadly useful language options.

Why SmarterGerman?

SmarterGerman is built for independent study. A student can work through lessons in order, review systematically, and practice both comprehension and production. Parents do not need German to use it as a homeschool course. Your job is scheduling, accountability, and choosing how you want to document progress.

Self-Paced Learning

Students progress independently without fixed class times.

No Parent Expertise Needed

All instruction is included; parents do not need to know German.

Speaking Practice Included

Speaking is practiced through guided monologues (“preaching”) and presentations (from A2 onward).

Pattern Drills

Pattern drills are used to automate grammar and sentence structure.

Clear Instruction Language

Explanations are in simple English for maximum clarity; practice is in German, with English support when needed.

Automated Feedback Only

Feedback is provided by tools; there are no human teachers giving corrections or grades.

SmarterGerman does not currently include built-in hour tracking. Families who need time logs commonly use an external tracker such as Toggl.

Family Pricing

Multiple children can learn in the same household. If you need family access options, contact me and describe your situation (number of learners, approximate levels, and whether learners will study concurrently).

SmarterGerman uses a simple household-based license. The standard annual price already includes full access to all levels from A1 through C1. There is no per-level pricing and no additional charge for advanced content.

For homeschool families, the practical benefit is that one license covers all children in the same household. This avoids having to purchase separate courses for each child or to rebuy the same level multiple times.

Annual access €299 per household
Levels included A1–C1 (all current and future updates included)
Number of learners all children in one household
Five-year plan (No Rush) €599 total (same access for 5 years). For homeschool household arrangements, contact me.

Homeschool Records Pack

If you need documentation for your homeschool files, you can download two print-friendly PDFs.

Hour tracking is not built into SmarterGerman. If your program requires hour logs, use an external time tracker (e.g., Toggl). If your program does not require hours, document outcomes (level completed) and materials used instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SmarterGerman grant credits or grades?
No. SmarterGerman provides instruction and practice tools only. Parents decide how to assign credit and grades within their homeschool program.
Is this an accredited program?
No. SmarterGerman is a language instruction provider, not an accredited school or diploma-granting institution.
Do I need to know German to help my child?
No. Instruction is designed for independent study. Parents typically handle scheduling, accountability, and documentation.
How do I document this for my homeschool?
Use whatever your program expects. Common approaches include (a) hours logged with an external tool, (b) listing level completed and materials used, and (c) optionally keeping a small set of work artifacts.
How long does each level take?
It varies by age, consistency, and prior language experience. A practical documentation approach is lesson-based: if a level is ~50 lessons and a lesson commonly takes ~3 hours, that implies ~150 hours for that level. Adjust to your learner’s real pace.
Does SmarterGerman include speaking practice?
Yes. Speaking is practiced through guided monologues (“preaching”) and presentations (from A2 onward), typically one per lesson, each commonly 20–30 minutes.
Who corrects and evaluates speaking and writing?
SmarterGerman does not provide human teacher feedback. Feedback is provided by automated tools. Families who want additional correction commonly use external tools (e.g., DeepL) or structured prompts for self-correction.
Can students earn official German certifications?
SmarterGerman can prepare students for external exams (e.g., Goethe-Institut, telc, DSH). Exams are administered by independent institutions, not by SmarterGerman. DSH is conducted only by German universities. Exam fees are not included, and registration/scheduling is handled by families directly with exam providers.
Does my child really need its own email address?

No. But as every child needs their own account we need to use two different email addresses of yours. To avoid an administrative nightmare, you can simply use your main parent email address and add the child's name with a plus sign, e.g. parent+child1@mail.com and parent+child2@mail.com.
