als, als, als

The word als can have three meanings. The differences become pretty clear by simply translating some examples:

1. als means as a
   
   Ich arbeite als Gärtner.
   I work as a gardener.
   
   Als Kind war ich klein und dünn.
   As a kid I was small and skinny.
3. als after comparisons means than
   
   Ich bin größer als du.
   I am taller than you.
5. als introducing a dependent clause means when or if
   
   Als ich nach Hause kam, schlief er.
   When I came home, he slept.
   
   Es sieht aus, als wäre er krank.
   He looks as if he was sick.

There is no real difference in meaning (!) between the following sentences:

In the video I wrote:

1. Er sieht aus, als ob er krank wäre. > He looks as if he was sick.
   In the text under III you read:
2. Er sieht aus, als wäre er krank. > He looks as if he was sick.

Note that in example 1 it is the "ob" that pushes the verb to the end here, not the "als" (=as).

"als" only pushes the verb if you can translate it as "when"
